Welcome to RTP High School Sailing
CSF Team Wins SAYRA HS Team Event!
The RTP high school sailing team sponsored by the Carolina Sailing Foundation participated in the first ever SAYRA high school sailing team race event.
The regatta was held at the Carolina Yacht Club located at Wrightsville Beach on August 6, 2010. There were three teams involved in the regatta. The host club sponsored a team and Beaufort Yacht Club sponsored the third team.
The Carolina Sailing Foundation team consisted of Kaity Norton, Joe David, Luke Devon, Morgan Grobin, Cooper Paiva, Sarah Chambers. Thanks to our excellent coaches the CSF team was very successful and only lost one race the entire day. The team racing format was something new for our sailors, however they demonstrated a great deal of skill and team racing strategy on the race course.
The Carolina Yacht Club created a perpetual trophy for this event and as this was the inaugural regatta the Carolina Sailing Foundation will be the first name placed on this trophy. This is a great honor as it will be displayed in the CYC trophy case which contains trophies dating back to the late 1800's.
About the Team
A Regional High School Sailing Team was
formed in 2004. It is a member of ISSA (Interscholastic Sailing
Association), the governing body in the U.S. for high school sailboat
racing. The group includes teams and students from a number of area
high schools. The skill level of team members ranges from novice
sailors to kids who have grown up sailing and racing. We welcome
newcomers from any area high school!
Our plan is to spin off teams representing individual
towns in the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and adjoining
communities) as the sailing program grows. Ultimately, we hope to have
teams from individual high schools. The team began life as the Green
Hope High School sailing team, but with the geographical expansion of
team members, is currently calling itself "Research Triangle Park (RTP)
High School Sailing". Current high schools represented on the active
roster include Green Hope, Enloe, Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill,
Leesville, Wakefield Middle, Riverside, and Ravenscroft.
Racing is done in 420's, a 14-foot,
doublehanded boat which is the boat of choice for high school and
collegiate sailing in the U.S. The team competes against other high
school sailing teams in the southeast, by entering into SAISA (South
Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association) regattas. The SAISA
regatta schedule can be found here. Members of the team also participate in races
and regattas sponsored by the Carolina Sailing Club on
Lake Jordan and Kerr Lake, as well as the SAYRA Juniors series.
Sailing Classes, Racing Classes, and Coaching
Session are conducted during the school year on Lake Jordon or Lake
Crabtree. The schedule for these sessions can be found on the Practice
and Race Schedule page.
About Our Boats
RTP High School Sailing currently has five
functioning practice/racing boats (Vanguard 420's). Two of these boats
are new, and were the result of a donation from the Nicholson family to
the Carolina Sailing Foundation. These boats are named the "Adamant"
and "Phenomenon", and have sail numbers 18 and 19. A new boat joined the fleet
in 2010, named "Resurrection". The other four boats
(3 working and one not in service) were purchased from the Lake Norman
Yacht Club, and are being repaired to be used as practice boats. We
have a double-deck trailer to haul 2 boats to regattas when needed.
