The RTP High School Sailing Team put forth 4 full teams, under the names Chapel Hill High School (A Division: Morgan Grobin and Lilli Manis, B Division: Cameron Manis and Luke Devon), and East Chapel Hill (A Division: Chip Howell and David Recekwald (Riverside), B Division: Chris Peterson and Sarah Chambers (Lake Norman, Race 1) or Maya Quinn (NW Carrabus, Races 2-6). While the winds started out promising in the first race, they quickly died. The first 2 races were held offshore from the club, however after the winds died, a third race was cancelled and the race committee wisely sought better conditions. Acceptable cove winds appeared in the infamous "Cocktail Cove" a little ways up the lake. Lake Norman PRO Steven Jones and his dedicated RC crew is commended for their perserverence and success in this series! Although the winds were light, a few little clouds helped drive the later races with winds peaking briefly at 5.5 kts. Key to these races were never straying from the starting line before the gun, finding the wind and careful roll tacking, painfully still downwind positions, as well as perserverence in the face of adversity. Winds were 2-5 for the latter races, and only slightly higher for the first race.
Overall, East Chapel Hill was 3rd out of 7 teams, while Chapel Hill was right behind in 4th. In the B division, the East Chapel Hill team placed 2nd, while the Chapel Hill team placed 3rd. Two skippers, Chris Peterson and Cameron Manis, managed to find firsts in one race each, in both cases by reading the first upwind leg correctly, reaching the windward mark first, and then protecting their position through the remainder of the race. Roll tacks were apparent in abundance, and were key under these conditions.
Detailed, official scores for this race can be found here on the SAISA web site. Yours truly failed to take his camera onto the RC boat, thus no pictures from this event... ;{
Regatta Results, 2007-2008 Season
Updated Nov 14, 2007
The team did not travel to this event. For reference, here are the Offical Scores.
Moderate winds with really big shifts over 90 degrees (!) characterized this overcast day on Lake Norman.The teams completed 12 races in wind conditions that varied during the day from 2 to 8 mph. The key to this day was watching the shifts and keeping clear air downwind. RTP High School Sailing put forth 4 teams, although 2 were handicapped by not having a "B" division team, which hurt their overall scores. Chapel Hill High School fielded a full team, with skippers Cameron Manis (A division, with Meg Russell (Green Hope) crewing), and Morgan Grobin and Luke Devon sharing roles for the B division. East Chapel Hill was represented by Chris Peterson, with crew Brad from Farragut. Leesville HS was represented by Dillon Paiva, with crew Megan Schulde (Enloe HS), while Ravenscroft HS was represented by Allison Powell with crew Allison Leak (Northwest Cabarrus). Overall, Chapel Hill finished 4th, with Leesville, Ravenscroft and East Chapel Hill coming in 9, 10 and 11th out of a field of 14. Dillon Paiva had 2 bullets with some great sailing, while Morgan Grobin got one on a gutsy set of choices that really used the wind angles to advantage.

Our sailors who travelled to Knoxville had a successful regatta. A total of eight teams participated. Chris (East CHHS) and Luke (CHHS) took 3rd place in A division, for a 7th overall, while Dillon (Leesville) and Megan (Enloe) took first place in B division, for a 5th overall finish. Meg Russell (Green Hope) sailed well on a couple of races for one of the Knoxville teams. Official Scores.
We had great weather and a great time sailing at Lake Norman on Saturday. Sixteen races were completed in Club 420 sailboats, in winds of 5-16 mph and temperatures that reached into the mid 50s. Bill Ross of LNYC was the PRO. Shallow water in the drought-stricken lake was a challenge during rotations, and occasional groundings made trouble for centerboard control lines.T he wind started out strong out of the North West and dropped to 5-8 after a few races. 10 teams attend the regatta, 2 from Knoxville (Bearden, Farragut), 3 from RTP (Leesville, Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill) and 5 from LNYC (Lake Norman, N. Mecklenburg, Forsyth Country Day, N. Cabarras, JM Robinson).
The racing was tight all day with lots of passing and lessons learned. Chris Peterson and Chip Howell (both from ECHHS) sailed for E. Chapel Hill in A division and finished in 4th place (with a best finish of 2nd) close behind very strong sailors from N. Mecklenberg, Forsyth and Lake Norman High. After a capsize on the way out to the first race, Cameron Manis (CHHS) and Joe David (Wakefield Middle) sailed for Chapel Hill and finished 5th (best finishes a pair of 3rds) in A division just a few points behind Chris and Chip. Luke Devon (CHHS) sailed with Maya Quinn from Cabarrus alternating as skipper and crew, in B division and finished 7th. Luke had several solid races when he was skippering. Dillon Paiva and Megan Schulde (Enloe) sailed B division for Leesville. They had a tight battle with Brad Milliken from Lake Norman all day and end up passing them right before the leeward mark in the last race to finish in a tie for first place with 15 pts in 9 races. Dillon and Megan won first via the tie breaker with 4 first place finishes vs 3 for Brad. Overall finishes were lower than the individual teams because the teams were scored with no A or B complementary team. Overall finishes were Leesville 7th, ECHHS 8th and CHHS 9th.
